About the Tennessee Freedom to Read Project

The Tennessee Freedom to Read Project is a statewide, nonpartisan, grassroots coalition of parents, educators, librarians, students, and everyday Tennesseans who believe that everyone deserves free and equal access to their public libraries.

We came together because our communities are facing unprecedented library shutdowns, politically driven collection audits, and efforts to restrict books, especially those reflecting LGBTQ+ people, diverse families, and marginalized voices. These actions threaten not only our libraries, but the Constitutional rights and freedoms of our neighbors.

The Tennessee Freedom to Read Project serves as the rapid-response contact for journalists covering library shutdowns and censorship attempts. We provide legislators, county commissioners, and local boards with accurate information, legal context, and clear guidance on how to protect their communities’ library services.

EveryLibrary, the national political action committee for libraries, supports TNFRP's website and digital engagements. TNFRP is a member of the National Library Alliance.
